The Way To Get Things Done
There are two kinds of people in this world: the doers and the procrastinators. Most of us unfortunately belong to the second group of folk.
Fear no more. This article is going to help you do the transformation from procrastinator to doer.
I don’t think quick solutions work in the long term when we are talking in terms of production, I believe the best way to be productive is having a special skill that most people don’t like to possess. Of course that there are short term solutions that work great like this shocking guide to productivity but not all solutions are like that so I might as well try to change my mind instead of my actions.
Every little action you do first starts on your mind so it is necessary for us to think and believe in what we want to be in order to become what we want to be.
Be Boring
“What does being boring have to do with my productivity?” I can hear you asking. It has everything to do with your productivity – you just don’t know it yet.
Being boring is not to be the kind of person that no one wants to be with, it has nothing to do with that. It has to do with making a habit of doing things most people consider boring but in the long term will help you increase your productivity.
Be organized.
Keep an agenda and a notebook with you throughout the day. Write in the notebook when a thought or an idea comes to your head.
Use the agenda to keep an organized schedule, to plan your days the night before and to jot down the dates whenever some new event comes up.
Being organized and structured, knowing what you are going to do when you wake up in the morning and being in time help you fulfill your days, feel good with yourself by achieving small goals every day and keep on the road to your long-term goals.
Be concentrated.
When doing something don’t let nothing and nobody distract you. Enter your zen like Martyn Chamberlin says. Focus on creating your art whatever it is. Even if you spend as little as half an hour doing it, do it with as much concentration as physically possible.
You will probably find out that you get so hooked to what you are doing that time flies by you and you end up doing several hours of work and create great products.
I’m really sloppy on this one, sometimes I’m writing something and then I just start playing guitar because I heard something or distract myself with the music I’m listening to. I’m working on that too.
Create a routine.
Okay, this one is really boring just from reading it but it is true.
Creating a routine gives you the flexibility (interesting choice of words ahm?) to do things in your free time, gives you the ability to have work prepared for when you can’t perform that same routine or when an opportunity falls on your lap.
Creating a routine helps your mind to set itself and be prepared for doing a specific task at a specific time and therefore you will do that willingly which will increase your concentration level. See? Everything is connected.
For instance, if you are a writer create the habit of writing every day at a specific time, writers like Ernest Hemingway or Stephen King created routines that made and force them to do what they wanted. Hemingway wrote only in the morning while King writes at least 10 pages a day without fail, even on holidays. If you are a runner, determine when it is the best time to run and make it a routine.
Having healthy habits falls into this, waking up early, exercising on a daily basis, and sleeping well are routines as well as eating in a healthy way.
Creating a routine will help you be more and more productive, and produce consistent work.
Be disciplined.
I can’t stress how important this one is. Without discipline everything I said above is going to be useless which only goes to show how interconnected everything is.
Discipline is what makes you stick with something. You need discipline to accomplish and ease every boring thing and pass through the boring stuff with a smile on your face. To help you accomplish that take a look at this perspective of discipline.
I understand that this concept might not be easy to grasp but do realize that becoming a boring person in this sense will help you achieve a higher productivity and help you produce, as I said, consistent work in the long term.
Please have in mind that being boring is not the same as being bored. Being bored is going to frustrate you and will decrease your productivity by shocking magnitudes. The secret is to be boring not bored.
